USS Indiana BB-58 Home Port is about the 5,653 men who served on the Battleship USS Indiana, BB-58, for various times between 1100 Hours on 30 April 1942, when the ship was put in commission at Newport News, VA; and 1515 Hours on 11 September 1946 when it was placed in Commission in Reserve at Puget Sound Shipyard, WA. Over eighty percent had not been out of the civilian way of life more than six months when they came aboard. Most were 18 year olds and had never seen an ocean before. They came from cities, towns, and farms. They came from the 48 States and the Territories. They came from all walks of life. They came from coal mining and steel making towns, auto making cities, cattle country, and dairy communities. They came together for one purpose -to make the world safe for democracy-. The older crew members trained and molded these young former civilians into a trim, trained, trusted, fighting crew that took their rightful and honored place in the annals and histories of the Third and Fifth Fleets of World War II. The pages of this web site are primarily excerpted from the unpublished World War II Diary of Benjamin M. Givens, Jr.; recalled, researched, written, and edited since 1987. He spent most of his war in the Main Battery Plotting Room, operating the Spot One fire control radar, and, since September 1990 researching and compiling a 5,653 man - 33 item data base of everyone who served on the USS Indiana, and, since June 1998 creating and maintaining this web site I would like to hear from you.
