I entered in the navy in 1993 and served aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72). I have always been in awe at the overwhelming firepower and beauty of the battleship. I truly wish I could have had the opportunity to serve on one.

I am very happy to have just found your website. My father served on the USS Indiana during the war and I remember some of the stories that he told. The information and pictures are a wonderful find for me since my father loaned his book and pictures to another shipmate in 1971. My father died in 1972 and these items were never returned to my family. I am looking forward to exploring your website and hopefully learning more about my dad's experiences. For the record, my father is Francis J. McShea Mus 2. He passed away on Easter Sunday morning, April 2, 1972. He was from New Jersey prior to joining the Navy at 18.

My great uncle, John Hyder, served on the Indiana during ww2 and I believe he was a plank owner although I see his name is not listed. He was a chief specialist and then an ensign who was in charge of a 40mm cannon up on top of one of the forward 16inch t rrets I believe. He also managed and played for the ship's baseball team. Does anyone know of him?

My father, Martin P. Frideres died on 23Feb.2000. He was so proud of being on the Indiana but never spoke about it much until the last year or so...so many questions are not answered. He was there from the commissioning until the war ended, during the hit with the Washington. If anyone remembers this wonderful man please write. I know he operated one of the large guns.' Was the "99 reunion in MN? If so I am so sorry he did not know of it.....he didn't travel much but would not have missed it if he knew it had been this close to home. Please ask your fathers, uncles, or grandfathers about their experiences....it is too late for me now.

I have a special interest in the history of the USS Indiana. My father, Peter J. Cirafice, Chief Aviation Machinist Mate, served aboard her in WW2. On 27 March 1945, he took off from the fantail in one of the Kingfishers to pick up a downed fighter pilot. The seas were very choppy that day. The pilot was picked up. The Kingfisher float plane headed into the wind, as it reached liftoff speed a large wave flipped it over. All were lost and were listed as missing in action. After the war, sometime in the 1950 s, the navy sent a letter stating that they found his remains on an island 60 miles from the approximate crash site. His remains were sent home with the Navy Cross. I was 10 years old at the time. I am 65 now. His name is listed aboard the USS Massachuset s at Fall River, Mass.

Thanks for site, just saw my dads picture and read on through your site. Your site once again reminds us of the sacrifices made by the American people during these times. My mother was an Army WAC test driving Jeeps in Central Texas and then transfered o Aberdeen Proving Grounds till the war was over. Dad is gone, but she reminds us not to take anything for granted, many people suffered for what we are enjoying. My dad, (Jorge Garza Flores, FC3) I am sure is smiling right now, and I thank you again fo your efforts. Just as a side note, at my Dads funeral, his Captain (please forgive me for not knowing his name right off hand,I have his card at home in my desk) was present and paying his respects,my family felt honored with his presence, his wife was lso present. He is truly an hororable man.

To all who make entries in this log, Greetings Shipmates This is my second visit and I am looking for any help from Indiana Crewmen out there. Mr. Givens is assisting in finding some things that I have requested. As I said in my first visit, I am looking for any information on Walter Albert Naatz, who served in Indiana from 1943 until 1946 when the ship was placed in commission in reserve. He is my Father-in-Law. Unfortunately, I never knew him, as he passed away hen my wife was ten years old. She feels it is important to pass her father's service on to her sisters and our kids. This is an excellent resource to accomplish what we are trying to do. Fair winds and following seas. Glenn M. Cassel AMH1 USN RET
